Paul Kemp es un periodista y escritor frustrado que llega a Puerto Rico para trabajar en el diario San Juan Star. En las oficinas del periódico se encuentra con una fauna a la que se acopla con facilidad llevando una vida vagabunda bañada con ron. En la isla ve dos mundos que chocan y conviven: el sueño americano invadiendo el paraíso con hoteles y lujos, y los sobrevivientes puertorriqueños con su cultura caribeña en la que la fiesta no para a pesar de la miseria en la que los mantienen. Kemp debe lidiar con esta realidad mientras decide qué hacer con su vida y encuentra la voz que necesita para convertirse en un verdadero escritor.
Esta película está basada en la novela Diario del Ron (1998) del padre del periodismo gonzo, Hunter S. Thompson. La cinta tardó más de diez años en materializarse después de ser soñada por un grupo de gente entre los que estaba el mismo Thompson, quien en 2005 decidió acabar con su vida. Como gran amigo personal y fanático del escritor, Johnny Depp protagoniza y produce este tributo a uno de los más violentos alteradores del orden literario y periodístico estadounidense de la segunda mitad del siglo pasado.
