The Artist ha conseguido uno de los máximos galardones: el de mejor película en la 84ª edición de los Premios Óscar de la Academia de Cine de Hollywood. Tom Langman, su productor, recibía el quinto premio de la noche para la película de manos de Tom Cruise.
A pesar de haber igualado en número de galardones a La invención de Hugo, The Artist ha sido la gran triunfadora de la noche por conseguir premios en categorías que no pertenecen a la parte técnica, como ha sido el caso de la película de Martin Scorsese.
Para conseguir el premio, The Artist se ha impuesto al trabajo, Jim Burke, Alexander y Jim Taylor por Los Descendientes, Scott Rudin por Tan fuerte, tan cerca, Brunson Green, Chris Columbus y Michael Barnathan por Criadas y señoras, Graham King y Martin Scorsese por La invención de Hugo, Letty Aronson y Stephen Tenenbaum por Medianoche en París, Michael de Luca, Rachael Horovitz y Brad Pitt por Moneyball: Rompiendo las reglas, Sarah Greeb, Bill Pohland, Dede Gardner y Grant Hill por El árbol de la vida y Steven Spielberg y Kathleen Kennedy por War Horse.
