Si bien uno de los personajes creados por el escritor Edgar Rice Burroughs, Tarzán, es una de las creaciones literarias que más adaptaciones al cine ha sufrido, otro de sus grandes éxitos, “La princesa de Marte” y sus secuelas, parecía hasta la aparición de este filme un proyecto condenado a no hacerse. La primera intención de adaptación data de los años 30, cuando se concibió hacerla como un filme de animación y, en varios aspectos, esta versión aparecida justo un siglo después de la primera publicación de la historia es casi de animación.
Se encuentra dirigido por el ganador de dos Óscars por las películas de animación “WALL E” y “Buscando a Nemo”, Andrew Stanton, marcando éste su debut con actores de carne y hueso, y el filme además está inundado de efectos digitales. Uno de los grandes impedimentos de cualquier tentativa de adaptación a la gran pantalla era que la tecnología no había avanzado lo suficiente como para poder recrear el universo imaginado por Burroughs. Eso ya ha cambiado y este “John Carter” se sustenta principalmente gracias a las imponentes imágenes generadas por ordenador. En este aspecto, la creatividad que demuestra poseer el filme es impresionante y va mucho más allá incluso de la míticas ilustraciones creadas por Frank Frazetta. Aunque esto es seguramente más que esperable y teniendo en cuenta su presupuesto de doscientos cincuenta millones de dólares (¿quién dice que hay crisis?), es obligado.
“John Carter” demuestra que a pesar de que el dinero proporciona un lujo de producción, no hace buena a una película. Muchas de estas mega producciones pecan de no tener un guión sólido y este filme debería habercontado con uno de cierta envergadura, especialmente debido a que Andrew Statton ha firmado varios de los mejores guiones de las recientes películas de animación y que también se contrató al destacado novelista Michael Chabon. Tal vez deberían haber hecho como Spielberg en “Indiana Jones y la última cruzada” y pagarle un millón de dólares a Tom Stoppard para rehacer los diálogos, ya que los que contiene este “John Carter” son la cosa menos inspirada del cine de aventuras reciente.
